Biggest Blogging Mistake: Waiting too long to start an email list

Michelle, from Making Sense of Cents said in her article How I Built a $1,000,000+ Blog:

"My biggest blogging mistake is that I waited until about two years ago to start an email list, and I waited even longer to take it seriously. I really can’t believe I waited so long!"

On Monday, January 22nd I sent out my first newsletter to 2 subscribers. Jenny and I (an extremely talented Script Supervisor that I met on the set of virgins! the series). Why? Because of the article above and hearing the message "start an email list" multiple times before. The Rule of 7 really worked.

The Rule of 7: Essentially, 'the rule of 7' is a marketing principle that states that your prospects need to come across your offer at least 7 times before they really notice your offer and start to take action. - via thebalance.com

When I started, I wanted to start with WHY. Building a Storybrand offers a great article that asks a few questions, here are my answers below:

1. What’s the big idea I want my audience to understand?

  • Power is gained by sharing knowledge, not hoarding it” -Unknown

  • As I learn new concepts, I want to share them with other artists on the come-up around me. We can glow up together!

2. What’s the single most important action my customers can take when they get this email?

  • Share, share, and more sharing.

    • Share what motivated you.

    • Share if you feel attacked.

    • Share what you learned.

    • Share what you like.

3. How do my readers benefit when they take action? As the reader, what's in it for me (WII-FM)?

  • Not feeling alone.

    • When I started reading a ton of books, I would talk to myself a lot (lol it's weird, but it's true). I would talk aloud. And walk through the concept, thinking about how to apply it to my life. Sharing concepts on Instagram was helpful but limiting, so I chose to expand into newsletters and blogging.

  • Learning new information that is relevant.

  • Finding new resources and reading books that helped me.

  • Empowerment.
