According to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK 5th Edition), a stakeholder is defined as "An individual, group, or organization who may affect, be affected by, or perceive itself to be affected by a decision, activity, or outcome of a project."

In my experience with the non-profit community arts sector, stakeholders can range from your grantor to your project team to local artists to venue owners to people who are on the opposite side of the political spectrum to the general public who attend events you might host. Thinking about stakeholders is crucial to the development of a great project, especially in the planning stages.

Stakeholders have the power to:

provide funding or take it away
fill your workshops/events/exhibitions/etc. or leave them empty
offer major decisions that push the organization forward or into the ground
execute the project deliverables or completely screw up the deliverables
manage project team members' progress or allow the project to run awry
keep your vision/mission alive or completely skew your mission/vision

Therefore, depending on how you plan your interactions with project's stakeholders it can affect the final outcome. As a visual learner, I love listing my stakeholders on a Power/Interest grid.
